The Innisfail
Flotilla of the Australian
Coast Guard Association Inc. has put in train a proposal
to replace its existing primary rescue vessel, the "Just
Laray".
The "Just
Laray" is a 13.7 metre Randell Cray Boat, launched in 1984
and purchased by the Flotilla second-hand in 1991 .In most respects
it has proven to be a most reliable and seaworthy vessel. It
is now 18 years old and is slowly losing its edge as a dedicated
rescue vessel
Replacement
Proposal
The Flotilla
has instigated moves to have constructed, by a reputable Cairns
Boat Builder, a 14metre aluminium boat, purpose built for search
and rescue functions within the area of its responsibility.
After
extensive negotiations with the preferred builder a preliminary
design has been completed incorporating all the safety, electronics
and mechanical features required by the Flotilla and appropriate
to its needs.
The preliminary
design estimate is $570,000 (October 2001). At this stage it
is proposed to place the order for the vessel in mid 2003 subject
to there being sufficient funds for the purpose with delivery
required in late 2003.
This estimate
has been based on current costing of all components and the
builder's preliminary estimate. However, for budgetary purposes,
a fund raising target of $650,000,
which allows for an inflationary factor, variations in the value
of the Australian dollar and unforeseeable extras, has been
set.
